School & Sports Physicals at The Piedmont Clinic
Quick. Easy. Thorough. We make sure your child is cleared, confident, and ready to go — whether it’s the classroom or the court.
Physicals Made Simple — and Done Right
Every new school year and sports season comes with a checklist. New shoes, supply lists, sign-ups — and somewhere on there is the physical.
We make that part easy.
At The Piedmont Clinic, we provide fast, detailed physicals for kids and teens of all ages. Whether it’s a kindergarten well-check or a high school sports clearance, our providers know exactly what’s required — and how to make your child feel comfortable every step of the way.
What’s the Difference Between a School Physical and a Sports Physical?
Great question — and one we get often.
School Physicals (a.k.a. Well-Child Checkups)
These focus on your child’s overall health, development, and milestones. They typically include:
Height and weight
Vision and hearing screening
Immunization updates
Growth tracking
Behavioral and developmental evaluations
Nutrition and sleep check-ins
These are usually required when enrolling in school, starting a new grade, or entering kindergarten.
Sports Physicals (Pre-Participation Physical Exam or PPE)
These are specifically designed to evaluate whether your child is healthy enough to participate in physical activity. They often include:
Heart and lung exam
Joint and muscle flexibility check
Injury history review
Blood pressure and pulse check
Assessment of any chronic conditions (like asthma)
Specific clearance forms required by schools or leagues
We can knock both out in a single visit, saving you time — and keeping everything documented in one place.
Why Physicals Matter More Than Just a Signature
Sure, a lot of parents think of these as just a “form to get filled out.” But a physical is also a chance to catch underlying issues before they become problems.
It’s how we:
Spot vision or hearing changes that might impact learning
Prevent sports injuries through early detection
Catch early signs of health conditions or mental health struggles
Update immunizations and medical records
Keep an ongoing, connected record of your child’s growth
And if we do find something that needs more attention? You’re already in the right place.
What to Bring With You
To make things go smoothly, bring:
Any required forms from your school or sports league
A list of any medications your child takes
Glasses or hearing aids if your child uses them
Your child’s vaccination records (if you’re new to the clinic)
Insurance card and ID
If you forget something — no worries. We’re used to it and can help you figure it out.
How Often Are These Needed?
School physicals are typically required at school entry (like kindergarten) and encouraged yearly.
Sports physicals are usually required annually before each season begins — some leagues require a fresh clearance each school year.
